ULTRASONIC THICKNESS GAUGES

Ascott Shop > INSPECTION & TEST EQUIPMENT > THICKNESS GAUGES - NON DESTRUCTIVE > ULTRASONIC THICKNESS GAUGES

Our ultrasonic thickness gauges are reliable and accurate and can measure any material. These testing methods are used to inspect any material to determine quality and safety without destroying or compromising its integrity and ensure reliability of materials subject to corrosion or erosion. There are a number of ultrasonic thickness gauges suitable for all industries from corrosion monitoring and thickness testing.

The advantages of using an ultrasonic gauge is that you donít require access to both sides of the sample, it is easy to use, accurate and reliable and it can be engineered to cope with coating etc.

An ultrasonic thickness gauge is used for measuring a materials thickness using ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic thickness gauge is a non-destructive testing method to check material properties like thickness.

This method of testing thickness is a standard in industrial measurements, due to the ability to gauge thickness measurements without needing access to both sides of the test piece.

The range of materials which can be gauge are endless, glass, ceramics, metals and many more.

The ultrasonic thickness gauge measures sample thickness by recording the amount of time it takes for sound to travel from a transducer through the material and back. The gauge will then automatically calculate the speed of sound through the material.

Some ultrasonic thickness gauges need a couplant of liquid, gel or paste to help eliminate gaps between the test object and the transducer. A more common couplant to prevent these problems is proplyene gylcol.

There is mainly two variations of transducers which can be used as an ultrasonic thickness gauge. An Electromagnetic acoustic transducer and a Piezoelectricity transducer, both types of transducers emit sound waves into the test sample using predetermined frequencies, the standard frequency being 5 MHz.

Ultrasonic thickness gauge advantages
  • Non-destructive technique
  • Does not require access to both sides of the sample
  • Can be engineered to cope with coatings, linings, etc.
  • Good accuracy (0.1 mm and less) can be achieved using standard timing techniques
  • Can be easily deployed, does not require laboratory conditions
  • EMAT Transducers can be used without liquid couplant

A digital thickness guage or UTM, is regulary used to check metal steel thickness in various loccations on ships and offshore platforms. When a surveyor equipped with a transportable UTM probe, it can expand the reach to steel plating in side and tanks. The digital thickness gauge can read the thickness of a metal by simply touching the metal with the measurement head. Contact with the metal is usually performed after firstly removing any coating or corrosion scale, then applying a pertroleum jelly to the probe before contact with the metal.

* to measure the effects of corrosion on unpainted structures or when coating thickness is not considered relevant
* to measure pitted, corroded or eroded pieces

Select the PosiTector UTG Multiple Echo probe...
*when you want to eliminate the coating thickness from the total wall thickness
*for measuring on sandblasted materials, hot surfaces or other applications requiring a more durable wear face
*for best repeatability in manufactured parts inspection

The certified step blocks are ideal for checking calibration and operation of ultrasonic thickness gages and are an important component in fulfilling both ISO and in-house quality control requirements.
